I will lift up mine eyes

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand;

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
(Psalm 121:1-8).
************
Psalm 121 is one of the Psalms which is memorized and recited by many Christians. It is a Psalm of comfort and assurance, a Psalm that was sung as the pilgrim travelled on the ancient road to Jerusalem. As the pilgrim travelled under the scorching heat, coupled with the danger of wild animals, this Psalm was sung to reassure the traveller of God’s power to protect. The traveller commenced, continued and completed his journey claiming the promises inherent in this Psalm.

Today, we have easier and faster means of transportation from one place to another. However, whether we travel by air, land or sea, these means of transportation have their associated risks, dangers and accidents. The careless, reckless and irresponsible driving on our roads which has resulted in many fatal and yet avoidable accidents, should cause any traveller to commence, continue and complete their journey by trusting in the protecting and preserving power of God. The Psalmist declares his source of help and directs his attention to this source. He begins the Psalm saying:
“I will lift up my eyes until the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2).

May the Lord cause you to identify your source of help and focus on Him.

I entreat you to take time to read the Psalm and meditate upon it. If possible, challenge yourself to memorize the Psalm if you have not already done so. We will take our time to study the Psalm in the coming days. Wherever you may travel to, be sure to commence, continue and complete it by trusting in God’s preservation power. He watches over you and He will help to the end. Shalom.

OUR PRAYER
Dear Lord, as we make our plans to travel from one place to another, we commit our safety and protection into your hands. We lift up our eyes unto you, O Lord – please help us. Amen.
