Our help comes from the lord

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
(Psalm 121:1-8).
***********
The Psalm invites people to consider the source of their help. Life is a long and treacherous journey that brings a lot of challenges in our way. So, when our world turns dark and cloudy as we tread the rugged path, where or who do we turn to for help?

When we face difficult situations in life, we naturally seek help, but the source of our help will largely determine the outcome of our seeking. Psalm 20:7 states:

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”

Let us examine Psalm 121 and observe the following:

1. THE SOURCE OF OUR HELP – The Psalm begins with a confident declaration: “I will lift up my eyes unto the hills..” Notice that lifting the eyes is effortless, and does not cost anything. However, it takes faith to do the lifting and to believe and to see the LORD of the hills. The hills may refer to the hills surrounding Zion, the mountain of God. As he journeyed to Jerusalem to worship, he lifted his eyes to the hills, and by faith, saw the LORD he was going to worship through His creation – the distant hills. This gave him confidence and hope, and hastened his steps towards the place of worship. He believed his help would come from this source.

2. THE SUPPLIER OF OUR HELP –
“My help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2). Having identified the source of his help, he also confirms the provider or supplier of this help. The LORD Himself, the Creator of heaven and earth, is the provider of our help. The source and supplier of our help are firm and solid. The foundation is unshakeable, unmovable and indestructible. We can therefore say with the Psalmist in Psalm 46:1-2:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble;

Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;”

The LORD will help us in our time of trouble or difficulty. His help is unlimited and inexhaustible. Our help comes from the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth. He who had the power to create the world and everything in it, has an irresistible power to help us, that no one, or no force can overturn.

As we go through life’s journey, and we encounter diverse difficulties and distractions, challenges and crises, let us not lose sight of the fact that the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth, is our Helper. I wish you a very relaxing, refreshing and reinvigorating weekend that restores your energy and desire to head into the house of the Lord to worship Him, your sole Helper, and to fellowship with other believers. Shalom.

OUR PRAYER
Lord, teach us to look up to you in faith always, and build in us the confident trust that we do not walk alone. Help us to believe that you are always with us and you will always help us. Amen.
